Prepositional Phrases

The (Proper) Prepositional Phrases Page:

"Prepositional phrases" do several nice jobs in sentences

They add color, texture, and other describing effects.

They are the groups of words that collect in sentences which have a preposition and a completing object of a preposition.

You're already an expert in using prepositional phrases, you just need to get a sense of when to use the term "prepositional phrase."

Take out a piece of writing you have done.

Look for such words as "in, over, into, from, with, etc."

Now look for what completes the preposition: "in" what? "into" what? etc.

You might have written such things as "Let's go into the barn." or even, "Let's go into the red barn."

The highlighted words in each sentence above (and below) are prepositional phrases.

Return to your writing and find several places where you could add a prepositional phrase.

Return to your writing in front of you, and find several places within the text where you could add with grand eloquence a prepositional phrase of wondrous word play.

I hope you're catching on. That you've notice that words of a green color are phrases of a prepositional nature. I'm getting tired of this

Wouldn't it be cool if there were a place that lists all of the prepositions we use in English

Well, it just so happens, there is one in this very program.  To check it out, click Preposition List.
