The (Pretentious) Prepositions List Page Here are what we use as prepositions. Many handbooks contain this list, but in case you don't have one handy, the list is included here. You're welcome. In English we have seventeen prepositions of one syllable: | at | by | in | | on | near | to | | from | down | off | | through | out | past | | up | of | for | | with | like | | | We also have about 21 two syllable prepositions. | about | along | below | during | | above | among | beneath | except | | across | around | beside | inside | | after | before | between | outside | | against | behind | beyond | over | | under | | | | | We have about six prepositions formed by combining some of the one syllable prepositions | into | upon | without | | onto | within | throughout | | But we can get even more creative by adding a describing word with a preposition or by grouping some prepositions. | according to | out of | on account of | aside from | | prior to | owing to | inside of | by means of | | in front of | subsequent to | because of | as to | | That's what we have by way of prepositions. Until, that is, you invent some more. Important note: don't confuse "prepositions" with "propositions".
